good evening and thanks for joining us. he's been to afghanistan, worked as a fighter pilot, and lived his entire life scrutinized by the world's media. but it's a new challenge that's leading prince william to really lose sleep. yes, little george, his new baby. instilling a healthy dose of fear in the young prince he's never dealt with before. the first portraits of the king-to-be were released tonight. as william opens up for the first time about the far more pedestrian challenges of being a pop. here's abc's linsey davis. >> reporter: there he is, prince george, the new heir to the british throne.

eyes closed and fast asleep. he was just days old when his maternal grandfather, princess kate's father, michael middleton, snapped these first public photos in the garden of their family home in bucklebury, e7kd. and today another first. prince william opening up to cnn about his first few weeks of fatherhood. >> he's a little bit of a rascal. put it that way. he reminds me of my brother or me when i was younger. i'm not sure. but he's doing very well at the moment. >> reporter: and a second snapshot with the family dog, lupo. the prince says there's no family rivalry between the two just yet. >> for me catherine and now little george are my priorities. and lupo. a lot of people know, we've got dogs and bringing a newborn back they take a little time to adapt. but he's been all right so far. he's been slobbering around the house a bit. he's perfectly ahappy. >> reporter: in his first royal appearance baby george practically shut downtown city

of london. prince william, just like any proud parent. >> i think i was on such a high anyway and so was catherine about george that we were happy to show him off to anyone who wanted to see him. as any new parent knows, you're only too happy to show off your new child and proclaim he's the best-looking or the best everything. >> reporter: this modern couple wants to show the world they're normal parents. >> it's one of the things, it's nice that people want to see george. so you know, i'm just glad he wasn't screaming his head off the whole way. >> i think prince william and kate, they try very hard to maintain their private life. it's very important to them. they were living for three years and going to the cinema and visiting the co-op market. they do try to fiercely protect this private life they have. but in london they are in the public eye and under the glare of the world's media. and releasing a photo like this is their way of trying to put across that they are a normal family, or as normal as possible. >> reporter: prince william

wants to be a hands-on dad, from putting the car seat into place in front of the world -- >> i have to practice. i really did. i was terrified that i was going to do something -- it was going to fall off or it wasn't going to close properly. >> reporter: to driving his wife and new son home from the hospital. >> the fact that prince william had to put the future king of england in the car seat in the back of the range rover under the glare of the world's media was a pretty surreal situation. but william is keen to try and stamp some normality on what is essentially not a normal situation. but he's fiercely protective of his family and his private life. and trying to do things in his own way is very important to him. >> i think the last few weeks for me have been very different emotional experience. something i never thought i would feel myself. and i find again it's only been a short period, but a lot of things affect me differently now. >> reporter: there are many differences from when and how prince william was raised. take the formality of the baby pictures. quite a relaxed setting with

prince george compared to this photo of a considerably older prince william after his christening with his father and mother, princess diana. these newly released baby pictures of prince george come less than two weeks shy of the 16th anniversary of her death. and once again, conspiracy theorists are reveling in fresh allegations that princess diana and her companion, dodi al fayed, were not killed in a car crash but they say were murdered by british special forces. scotland yard is now looking into the sensational claim that diana's death was not an accident. a new book set to be self-published next week by author alan power claims the british government had diana killed because they saw her as a threat. while scotland yard says it's scoping the new information, officials say they're not opening up a new investigation. >> think of it this way. imagine if somebody came up and said i have evidence, new evidence about the kennedy

assassination. would we just say oh, forget about it, it's obviously not true? no, we'd investigate it. >> reporter: in the meantime, prince william says he's attempting to live as normal a life as possible. very much reminiscent of his mother. >> i'm as independent as i want to be. and same as catherine and harry. we've all grown up differently to other generations. and i very much feel if i can do it myself i want to do it myself. >> reporter: prince harry was just in angola earlier this week following in his mother's charitable footsteps. he surveyed the area that is still plagued by dangerous land mines. and last week prince william took a few days' leave from his parental duties to attend an agricultural show in wales. but he's already beginning to sound more like a dad than a prince. and let's face it. how many princes change diapers? prince william calls it a badge of honor that he was the first to change baby george's diaper. or as they call it in the uk, a

nappy. >> i wasn't allowed to get away with it. i had every mid-wife staring at me going you do it, you do it. he's growing quite quickly. but he wriggles around a lot and he doesn't want to get in his seat, which is a pron. >> prince william is already thinking about passing down the values his father instilled in him, like protecting endangered species in africa. >> i'll have toy elephants and rhinos around the room. we'll cover it in sort of, you know, lots of bushes and make him grow up as if he's in the bush. >> reporter: that is, until he's old enough to take him on a royal safari. but that's the least of his concerns for now. >> at the moment the only legacy i want to pass on to him is to sleep more and maybe not change a nappy quite so many times. >> reporter: but don't be fooled by baby george's quiet slumber in this photo. >> well, as you fathers might know, i'm actually quite looking forward to -- >> reporter: for "nightline" i'm linsey davis in new york. >> i think it's safe to say diana would be proud. next, women are buying more guns than ever.

when you think about guns and their most ardent supporters, you may have an image of a particular type of person. it's probably a guy. but that may soon change. with almost 1 in 4 american women now saying she owns a firearm. and many are vocal about it, making sure people know that their right to bear arms isn't

about wearing tanktops. with gun manufacturers taking notice, abc's juju chang met up earlier this year with a group of women proudly packing heat. >> fire! >> reporter: for these women girl power means firepower. >> good. ready? bust it. >> reporter: welcome to advanced defensive pistol training. >> turn that gun over. >> reporter: these are the sure shots, a women's only shooting league based in austin, texas. >> you rocked that one, girl. that was awesome. >> reporter: nationwide, gun ownership is at an all-time high, and now a record 23% of women say they own a gun. >> fire! >> reporter: these women are dead serious about the right to bear arms. >> you have to think defensively all the time. you have to think about it when you're in your car. you have to think about it when you're at the grocery store. i mean, it just takes a second for everything to change. >> reporter: holly gal etch r is a mother of two who says she joined sure shots to learn the

got this. okay? >> reporter: this sisterhood of local gun enthusiasts has quickly drawn hundreds of members in just two years. from 9-year-old gia, who hopes to shoot in the 2020 olympics. to 63-year-old marcia, who only discovered shooting a few years go. >> we got most of them 8, 9, and zeros right on the x. >> reporter: mickey jones is sure shot's founder and this is her homemade assault rifle, the snow queen. nicky's philosophy for the group is simple. empower women so they won't become victims. >> if i'm in an alley and an attacker comes up and has malicious intent, i can't bare nuk'll fig knuckle fight him. but i can train with my gun and then if the time comes i can use it to save my life. >> reporter: the gun industry markets directly to women with smaller female-friendly firearms, customizable handguns,

rifles awash in pink and loads of accessories for the fashion conscious shooter. >> it secures to the center of your bra. >> products like the flash bang bra holster can uniquely conceal a weapon a woman's body. there are so many new products that l.a.-based gun blogger natalie foster start aid website called "a girl's guide to guns" to help women navigate the world of shooting. >> they want a lot more information, anything from what gun to buy to what holsters to use to what hairdo you want to use to make yourself feel cute at the range. you know, there's just something cool about the juxtaposition of that hardcore black gun with, you know, a little touch of pink. this is actually my custom holster. i like this one because it's kind of business in the front, party in the back. when you're not shooting all you see is the gray. but then when i do pull it out like that and i'm ready to fire you see a little flash of pink. just a little girliness in there. and this is my 12-gauge shotgun.

the industry is really letting us have a lot of fun with our firearms. and women are owning it in a really cool way. >> reporter: this nra women's network is designed with you in mind. >> reporter: the nra, which is overwhelmingly male, is aggressively courting this new wave of potential members. >> 27 million women strong are armed and fabulous and loving it. >> reporter: ads like these feature female shooters like natalie. the nra claims nearly 30 million women own guns, a number critics say is grossly exaggerated. >> oh, that did some damage, all right. wow. >> reporter: but no one disputes that more women than ever have been flocking to gun clubs like these. >> i want you to see how much faster she was at just popping off a round. >> this thing freaks me out. i have a loaded gun in my purse. >> fire! >> oh, my gosh. that kick.

>> the reality is we often have something in our arms that we can't drop. guess what? women, you've got kids in your hands a lot. and fire! >> reporter: in the next exercise the pink beach ball stands in for that precious cargo. >> using the frame of her holster, rack and fire. outstanding! >> reporter: although none of these women have actually had to use their guns to defend themselves, they believe in preparing for the worst case scenario. >> i keep a 12-gauge pump action shotgun next to my bed. being a single female i have to consider this. i have to consider how to protect myself. >> reporter: and all of them said they now feel safer having a lethal weapon around. >> i don't carry a gun because i live in fear. i don't live in fear because i do carry a gun. >> reporter: but gun control advocates say that is a false sense of security. >> a woman with a gun in the home is almost three times more likely to be murdered than a woman who doesn't have a gun in her home. >> reporter: laura safian works

and celebrity blogger perez hilton got out of control. and gaga herself had to step in to stop the threats to hilton. she took to her website with her blog full of love. "i don't know that i'm powerful enough to stop it myself. please represent me and our community with the values we cherish and live by." gaga inc. while she's spreading her message, gaga still does business like a boss. her songs not only catchy, they're really, really successful. not just the musician but a force with considerable power and influence. lady gaga has more twitter followers than president obama, a near perfect clout score, and trails only the queen, oprah on the "forbes" celebrity list. and with love like this, who knows? maybe someday soon she'll be taking the throne. thank you for watching abc news.
